Just like how the Rachel Green hair cut made waves a decade ago, the smokey eye makeup has emerged as one of the most popular looks for those in the showbiz – and those who’re not but aspire to emulate the style of their favorite celebrities.  Smokey eye makeup is a night time makeup, and it goes perfectly with the shiny and sometimes loud outfits that are synonymous with parties. Quite obviously, the makeup isn’t just mindless fashion – it really does add a whole different dimension to your looks and style. Perhaps one of the most important reasons for its popularity is that it suits virtually every face. Additionally, it can be applied even without the help of a professional makeup artist.

There are a few things you need to be careful about while trying to don the smokey eye look though:

Colors

The importance of colors in creating the smokey eye effect cannot be overstated. It is the cornerstone of the beauty of this makeup. Despite the fact that you may have quite a number of colors at your disposal, you still need to ensure the following:

  • Choose two colors, one dark color which will be the feature color, and another lighter color which will be the supporting color. This choice will be dependent on factors such as the color of your eyes, hair as well as your skin tone.
  • If for instance you have blue eyes, colors like black, grey, dark blue, purple or violet will do nicely as feature colors for your eye shadow.
  • If however, your eyes are green or hazel colored, you ought to use dark green, purple, deep khaki or brown colored eye shadows.
  • Copper, grey, black or brown eye shadow also suit brown eyes.

You should choose the supporting eye shadow carefully again depending on the effect you wish to create. You can either choose from light peach, sand, lilac, champagne or taupe colors; or you could use a white eye shadow for a completely different effect.

Make sure that you use very high quality material for your makeup, which should be kept in very good condition. The tools that you use should also be in excellent condition; pencils sharpened and good-quality eye shadow brushes.

Application

While actually applying the makeup, you will need to follow certain precautions in order to ensure you’re able to create the right effect. Here are some of those:

  • Check the eyelids to make sure that there is no oil film or there are no smudges on it in order to prevent the makeup from melting, and in turn, creating more smudges.
  • Use eyeliner that is of a lighter color when lining the lower lashes. Make sure that it is well spread, and if necessary, apply some eye shadow.
  • The upper lining of eyelashes ought to be lined with same color as the smokey eye makeup.
  • Make sure that the supporting color blends well with the feature color for the perfect outcome. Colors like soft gold and purple or peach and emerald green are two nice combinations.
  • Finally, once the colors and the eyeliner are perfectly done, add some mascara to enhance the effect.
